Earl V. Pavlovich (later Prebezac; 1924–2018) was a Ritchie Boy photo interpreter (Class 8) who later served in Normandy with the 19th Tactical Air Command.
Biography edit
Earl V. Pavlovich (later Prebezac; 1924–2018) was raised in St. Louis. He left school at sixteen and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1942 after a Navy recruiter discouraged him because of his small stature. After reception at Belleville, Illinois, and training at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, with the 101st Regimental Motorized Cavalry, he was selected for the Military Intelligence Service for his Serbian and Croatian language skills and ordered to Camp Ritchie.
At Camp Ritchie he trained in photo interpretation (Class 8) rather than language work, graduating in January 1943; Col. Charles Banfill presented the diplomas. He later trained with the 937th Aviation Engineer Battalion and in aviation camouflage, embarked from Camp Shanks on the steamship Mauretania, and arrived in England on 4 February 1944. He landed in Normandy on D-Day plus 21 at Omaha Beach and served with the 19th Tactical Air Command camouflaging P-47 and P-51 aircraft. He received four battle stars (Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland). About six months after Germany’s surrender he returned to the United States on the hospital ship Larkspur after a heart infection.
After the war he was adopted by his mother’s second husband and took the surname Prebezac.
