Raymond Paul Raux (7 July 1910–10 July 1943) was a French-born Camp Ritchie trainee and U.S. Army second lieutenant with the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division; he was killed in action in Sicily while attempting to talk an enemy pillbox into surrender.
Biography edit
Raymond Paul Raux was born on 7 July 1910 in Gainneville, France, and came to the United States with his mother and sister after his father’s death in France. He completed college work toward secondary-school teaching (languages and science) and in 1942 was living in Nassau County, Long Island.
Drafted on 6 June 1942 at Fort Jay (enlisted ASN 32358404), he was later commissioned a second lieutenant (ASN 01305111). On 14 February 1943 he married Doris Katherine Strobridge in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, while serving at Camp Ritchie. Roster materials also associate him with Italian IPW training (including Class 4 / Italian IPW Team 5) before overseas movement.
In early July 1943 Raux joined Headquarters Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, days before the Sicily invasion. On 10 July 1943, near a crossroads about three miles south of Vittoria, he approached a pillbox alone to demand surrender and was shot in the passageway. Major Robert M. Piper later described the incident for burial investigators. Raux was ultimately reburied at Neuilly, near Paris, at his mother’s request.
