Biography

Marcos B. Roces was a U.S.-born Catholic Ritchie Boy from a Filipino family of Spanish landowners. He finished schooling in Schwyz, Switzerland (from 1933), earned a high school certificate at St. Joseph's College in London, enrolled at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, in 1937, and later studied at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C. After the fall of Bataan in April 1942 he joined the U.S. Army.

He graduated from the Fort Benning Infantry School as a second lieutenant in October 1942 and was assigned to the 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment at Fort Ord, California, as an intelligence assistant under Col. Jaime Velazquez. He served with the First Filipino Regiment in California until July 1943, then with the Second Armored Corps at Fort Ord; from June to October 1943 he trained at Presidio of Monterey and was promoted to first lieutenant. He later trained at Camp Ritchie (class 13).

While on furlough in Washington he married Mary Lou Stagner. A January 1944 notice in Philippines Magazine placed him at the Military Intelligence Training Center, Camp Ritchie. In May 1944 he was assigned to the G-2 section of the Fifth U.S. Army in Europe and served in southern France, taking part in the Rome–Arno campaign and operations in the northern Apennines. Promoted to captain in 1944, he was sent to Leyte the following year and helped organize the G-2 section of the reconstituted Philippine Army. He was honorably discharged at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Returning to Manila in 1946, he managed Cine Ideal for the next 32 years.
