Julius Siegel (22 June 1907 – 1977) was a Ritchie Boy (from France; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 10. The record lists a final rank of Technician Third Grade.
Biography
Julius Siegel (22 June 1907-1977) was born in Alsace-Lorraine, France. Julius attended college (one year) in Germany. Worked as manager of a furniture store (branch). He spoke German and French. In 1939 his parents were sent by French authorities to Gurs internment camp as German Jews. Siegel and his sister escaped to England and later came to Chicago; he subsequently joined the U.S. Siegel entered Camp Ritchie in 1943 and graduated with the 10th class on 20 September 1943 as a German assistant interrogator. In October he went to Camp Young, California, for desert training with Team 115. He returned to Camp Ritchie on 1 December, was alerted on 1 February 1944, and was transferred to Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn, on 18 February. He embarked for Europe on the SS Aquitania on 21 February and disembarked in Scotland on 28 February 1944. He was awarded the Bronze Star for that service.
