Max Horlick (1918 – 25 February 1945) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 19 and served with IPW Team 414.
Biography
On 13 July 1944, Horlick graduated with 19th Class (MII French). He attended In 2007, at age 89, he received a PhD from Columbia University (French Literature). Max graduated High School. He graduated with 19th Class (MII French). He then was a staff director of international research in the Department of Labor and in Social Security. He then was a staff director of international research with the Department of Labor and with the Social Security Administration. Max Horlick began his career in international affairs at Camp Ritchie, where he was a graduate of Class 19 (MII French) and also of a postgraduate Class 21 (IPW). He recently he has continued research and to prepare an article on the influence of Ritchie in the Battle of the Bulge, under the impetus of Dan Gross. (RB Max Horlick was on same shipment) I didn’t know that Karl Schafer was a replacement for Alfred Kupferschmidt." I attended the funeral this morning of Ritchie Boy Max Horlick. Born in New Jersey to immigrant parents, Max had a facility for languages and received an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in French. Because of his language skills, he was sent to Camp Ritchie, MD, for training in military intelligence. He went overseas and served in the Battle of the Bulge, and interrogated captured German Officers. Ritchie Boy Max Horlick was a prolific writer and published two books - one, entitled The Pension Mountain, was written in 2007 and describes the crisis facing aging Americans with respect to their future retirement benefits. The second book, The Agony of Victory, was a novel published in 2011 and based on actual events. Ritchie Boy Max Horlick was a wonderful storyteller and regaled me several years ago with stories about his life growing up on a chicken farm in rural New Jersey, the times his wife, Ruth, had spent with him at Camp Ritchie, and his work as a journalist when he was well into his 80's and 90's.
