William Ellsworth Pringle (born 13 June 1916) was a Pittsburgh steel engineer and Army captain who supervised intelligence instruction at Camp Ritchie and later served in military government in occupied Germany.
Biography[edit | edit source]
William Ellsworth Pringle was born on 13 June 1916 in Pennsylvania. He earned a B.S. in business administration from Duquesne University in 1939 and took metallurgy coursework at Pennsylvania State College in 1941. From 1939 to 1942 he worked as a production engineer for Jones & Laughlin Steel in Pittsburgh. He married Mary Louise Markle.
Pringle served from 27 April 1942 to 22 May 1946. As a first lieutenant he was intelligence officer of an antiaircraft automatic-weapons battalion and an aerial photo interpreter. He instructed in photointerpretation and became supervisor of intelligence instruction at the Military Intelligence Training Center, Camp Ritchie, Maryland (Class 16 association on the roster). As a captain he served as economics officer in military government, coordinating steel-plant survey reports in the American occupation zone and representing metals industries on the German Standard-of-Living Board, Office of Military Government. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
