Henry R. Immerwahr (28 February 1916 – 2013), Henry Rudolph Immerwahr, was a German-born classicist and Camp Ritchie Class 18 interrogator who later taught at Yale and UNC Chapel Hill and directed the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.

Biography

Henry Rudolph Immerwahr was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland), on 28 February 1916. After Nazi racial laws closed university paths at home he studied classics in Florence (1934–1938), taking a dottore in lettere with a thesis on Plato’s concept of tyche. A fellowship at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1938–1939/40) shaped his career and introduced him to archaeologist Sara “Sally” Anderson, whom he later married.

He immigrated to the United States, earned a Ph.D. at Yale in 1943, became a U.S. citizen, and served about three years in the U.S. Army—including Camp Ritchie Class 18 and IPW team assignments—before a Guggenheim postwar fellowship (1946) for work on Athenian vase inscriptions. He taught at Yale (1947–1957), then at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (to 1977), becoming Alumni Distinguished Professor of Greek. From 1977 to 1982 he directed the American School in Athens. Major publications include Form and Thought in Herodotus (1966), Attic Script: A Survey (1990), and the online Corpus of Attic Vase Inscriptions. He died in 2013.
