Edward W. Schmidt (1922–2010) was a Wisconsin Ritchie Boy (Class 26) who, per a contemporary Sheboygan newspaper account, went on to OSS counter-intelligence work in Europe and received a field commission as second lieutenant.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Edward W. Schmidt was born in 1922 in Wisconsin. He enlisted at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 26.
According to a 13 December 1945 Sheboygan Press report on his return to Sheboygan on terminal leave, he left a local law practice in June 1943, trained at Camp Grant and the Army finance center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, then completed the Military Intelligence Training Center course at Camp Ritchie. He was placed in the Office of Strategic Services, received counter-intelligence training in London, went overseas in March 1944, and performed counter-intelligence work in southern France, Germany, and parts of Austria, receiving a field commission as a second lieutenant while in France. He returned to the United States on 10 November 1945.
Schmidt died in 2010.
