Ludwig R. Sander (1906–1975) was a New York–born painter and United States Army staff sergeant who trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 20) in the German Intelligence Section.

Biography

Ludwig R. Sander was born in 1906 in New York to a German-American family and became a painter. He enlisted at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York (ASN 32343196).

When OSS analytical orders and Camp Ritchie orders arrived the same day, Sander went to the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland (Class 20), because the Army school took precedence. He served in the German Intelligence Section, rose to staff sergeant, worked first at division level and then for the rest of the war at regimental level in a rifle regiment—the furthest forward Army intelligence ordinarily went. Preparing to cross the Rhine with the 30th Division under cover designations, he and his lieutenant interrogated civilian-clothes spies brought in near the lower Rhine.

After the war Sander resumed his art career in New York. He died in 1975.
