Morton Hollander (2 December 1918–17 April 2008) was a Brooklyn-born lawyer, Camp Ritchie trainee (Class 24), and longtime Department of Justice appellate chief.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Morton Hollander was born on 2 December 1918 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College (1937) and from Columbia Law School (1941), where he served on the Law Review and as chief justice of the Marshall Moot Court. After early government legal work with the Railroad Retirement Board and the Office of Price Administration, he entered the U.S. Army for military intelligence service (1942–1946), including training at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 24.
After the war Hollander joined the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management legal staff (1946–1948), then spent more than three decades at the Department of Justice, rising to chief of the Civil Division’s Appellate Section (1960–1980). He later coordinated Iranian-asset litigation (1979–1980), taught as an adjunct at Antioch and Georgetown, and mediated for the D.C. Court of Appeals. Hollander died on 17 April 2008 in Bethesda, Maryland.
