Orizzonte G. Mastroianni (1917–2004) was a U.S. Army officer who graduated with Class 2 at Camp Ritchie and later returned as a colonel to recall early MITC training.

Biography

Orizzonte G. A. Mastroianni was born in 1917. His father sent him to school in Italy for eleven years; he returned to the United States in 1936 to avoid Italian compulsory student military service. Fluent in Italian and Spanish, he came to the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, from the 713th Military Police Battalion of Albany, New York, and graduated with the second class (Class 2). Classmates included future diplomat Vernon Walters. Early MITC training, he later recalled, still used tents for officer quarters, night land-navigation with Chinese-language maps, observation drills at High Rock, and interrogation techniques taught in part by British instructors.

Mastroianni later rose to colonel. In July 1986, after a forty-four-year absence, he revisited Fort Ritchie and described those early classes to the Gettysburg Times. He died in 2004.
