Seymour Sherman Steinberg (1921–2012) was a New York–born Camp Ritchie officer (Class 10) who analyzed intelligence in Britain and, in May 1945, had custody of Alfred Jodl at Flensburg.

Biography

Seymour Sherman Steinberg was born in 1921 in New York City (his father was born in Lithuania). He graduated from the City College of New York in 1942 with a B.S. In history and economics and later served as an instructor in those fields. Transferred from an engineering unit to Camp Ritchie, he trained in Class 10 (IPW-German; also associated with Class 9 order-of-battle instruction) and was commissioned in the cavalry, later reaching captain.

Shipped to Britain, he analyzed intelligence including French railroad reports and helped run an experimental carrier-pigeon program into occupied France. Near the end of the war in Europe he was assigned custody of Oberstgeneral Alfred Jodl at Flensburg after Jodl’s arrest, conveying him toward Nuremberg—an episode he later recounted at a 2012 Camp Ritchie veterans reunion and in the press. He died in 2012.
