S. Walter Tick (born Siegbert Walter Tick / Tikotzki) was a Berlin-born Jewish refugee, chemistry graduate, and U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps NCO associated with Camp Ritchie training who served in Europe after VE Day (1945–1946).
Biography[edit | edit source]
Siegbert Walter Tick (service name S. Walter Tick / S. W. Tick) was born in Berlin and fled Nazi Germany with his sister and parents, reaching the United States in March 1939 at age 17. He finished high school in the U.S. And earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois (including summer work and a semester at Columbia University), receiving a draft deferment to complete the degree.
Drafted after Pearl Harbor, he trained with the Chemical Warfare Service and a chemical mortar battalion before reassignment to military intelligence. Family research places him among Camp Ritchie–trained intelligence NCOs (MOS 631) who served in the Counterintelligence Corps after VE Day. He was in Europe with U.S. Forces European Theater from 19 June 1945 to 20 May 1946, with passes associated with Camp King at Oberursel and other interrogation centers, and was discharged in June 1946. He served from 19 May 1944 to 2 June 1946 and received the World War II Victory Medal among other citations.
