Fred Fields (born Siegfried Dingfelder) fled Germany with his family after Kristallnacht and arrived in the United States in 1940. A baker in Brooklyn before the draft, he trained at Camp Ritchie and joined the 69th IPW near Metz, serving under XX Corps, Third Army, through Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Remagen breakthrough.
