George Mandler (June 11, 1924 – May 6, 2016) was an Austrian-born American psychologist, who became a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, San Diego.

George Mandler (June 11, 1924 – May 6, 2016) was an Austrian-born American psychologist, who became a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, San Diego. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1924 to a middle class family.
As World War II progressed, captured equipment was sent to Camp Ritchie to the training cadres of the Composite School Unit (CS), which simulated enemy, mostly German, tactics. He was the head of the psychology department at the University of California at San Diego.
Mandler was drafted by the US Army in 1943 and was trained in military intelligence at Camp Ritchie.
Interesting fact courtesy of the April/May 2007 Maryland Cracker Barrel magazine and the book, Interesting Times, by Ritchie Boy George Mandler, 2013. That way, a trainee interrogator could practicing German POWs, French local civilians, and Japanese machine gunners in their own language. There were a number of men from the Hagerstown, MD, and Waynesboro, PA area who served in the CSU.
Ritchie Boy George Mandler's autobiography is titled Interesting Times. After Germany invaded Austria, Mandler left for England and eventually to the United States. He ended up as a front line interrogator with the 7th Army in Germany.
He describes in detail his training and the function of military intelligence in the Army. Mandler continued in Military intelligence and counter-intelligence work in post-war Germany. After returning from the War, RB Mandler earned degrees in psychology and went on to have a distinguished career.
