Kurt M. Gebel (1920–2002) was a Ritchie Boy (from Germany; Protestant) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 25.
Biography
Gebel was a Ritchie Boy. Born March 21, 1920, in Hamburg, Germany, he lived his early life in New York City. He was a 1937 graduate of Far Rockaway High School, Long Island, N.Y. Throughout his life, he studied at Brooklyn College and City College, both in New York, Northeastern University in Boston, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University and last at Wilson College in Chambersburg. Gebel enlisted on December 30, 1942, served first in the U.S. Army Air Force, then the U.S. Air Force and last in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. Prior to his overseas duty, he was stationed at Camp Ritchie for two and a half years, working in military intelligence. He was employed in the engineering department at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, from 1946 until retiring on March 21, 1983. He was responsible for 12 patents. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Gebel served on the American Red Cross board for many years. He served as president and as blood service chairperson from 1986 through 1992. As of March 9, 1999, he had donated 23.6 gallons of blood which helped a total of 524 people. Kurt Gebel passed away on March 24, 2002, at the age of 82.
