Max Horlick (1918–2018) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 19 and served with IPW Team 414.
Biography
Mark Hellman writes that his Father "had grown up in a German-speaking Lutheran farm family in Nebraska, gone to the Univ of Nebraska, graduating at age 19 and then getting an MA there in the mid-1930's in Latin and German. The momento that Ronald Friedman shared a photo of (below right) was a familiar object in our house.... One sad thing about the momento: 2nd Lt. Shafer was a replacement....2nd Lt. Alfred Kupferschmidt, was killed in action on February 25, 1945, three days after the photo (below left)...was taken." According to RB historian Dan Gross, "Captain Fred W. Hellman (1912-1991) graduated Class 20 (German) and was officer in charge of IPW 164 attached to XXI Corps. At end of October 1944, fifteen IPW teams (30 officers and 60 enlisted men) were transported to Camp Shanks and then embarked on the SS Aquitania to ETO (Scotland). (RB Max Horlick was on same shipment) I didn’t know that Karl Schafer was a replacement for Alfred Kupferschmidt."
I attended the funeral this morning of Ritchie Boy Max Horlick. Max turned 100 on March 10 and enjoyed a full life until the very last day. Born in New Jersey to immigrant parents, Max had a facility for languages and received an undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in French. Because of his language skills, he was sent to Camp Ritchie, MD, for training in military intelligence. He went overseas and served in the Battle of the Bulge, and interrogated captured German Officers. Max will long be remembered by the Ritchie Boy community.
Ritchie Boy Max Horlick was a prolific writer and published two books - one, entitled The Pension Mountain, was written in 2007 and describes the crisis facing aging Americans with respect to their future retirement benefits. The second book, The Agony of Victory, was a novel published in 2011 and based on actual events. His third book, SNAFU, has just been accepted by the publisher and will be available online and in print in May 2018.
Ritchie Boy Max Horlick was a wonderful storyteller and regaled me several years ago with stories about his life growing up on a chicken farm in rural New Jersey, the times his wife, Ruth, had spent with him at Camp Ritchie, and his work as a journalist when he was well into his 80's and 90's.
