Lawrence W. Stanton (ASN 526581) was a Ritchie Boy (from United States) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 12.
Biography
Stanton was a Ritchie Boy. Stanton was born on 14 June 1924 in Rochester, New York. Stanton died on October 16, 1974 at age 50.
After finishing high school in 1942, he took up photographic work and was employed by the T.V.A. in Photographic Mapping a Syracuse, N.Y. On Dec 15, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was assigned to Aerial Photographic Instruction School an was graduated May 8, 1943, then acted as Instructor in Combat Intelligence until Sept. 1943 when he was transferred to the Military Intelligence Training, Camp Ritchie, MD. where he finished in Nov. 1943 and the assigned to the 4th Marine Division at Camp Pendelton, Calif., serving with the Photo Intelligence Section until discharged.
He sailed with the 4th Marine Division from San Diego, Calif. He participated in their operations at the Marshall Islands, Roi-Namur, Feb. then back to Maui, T.H. and established a rest camp. Again sailing west they were at Saipan July 9, and Trinian July 25, 1944.
Their next trip was to Iwo Jima where they landed Feb. 19, 1945, but it required nearly a month to capture and island of 8 square miles. His division then returned to the Maui Rest Camp, and remained there until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged Nov.
He was active in Church and Scouting.
