His petition for naturalization (U.S. District Court, Western District of South Carolina at Spartanburg) lists residence at enlistment as 30 Bogardus Place and confirms the name Franz Karl Hauser, also known as Frank C. He served with the 61st Signal Radio Intercept Company as a radio operator before transferring to Camp Ritchie in June 1944 (class 20, German IPW). His languages included German, French, Italian, and Hungarian. He graduated on 16 August 1944 as a German document examiner, was promoted to staff sergeant on 4 September 1944, and shipped overseas via Camp Kilmer aboard the RMS Queen Mary, arriving in Scotland on 25 September 1944. He served with IPW Team 140 and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations during the Rhineland Campaign.
