About the data

This wiki was seeded from a merged research file of Camp Ritchie class-roster rows and a larger demographics table compiled over many years by Daniel (Dan) Gross and other researchers. Soldier pages are a public starting point, not a finished biography of every man.

Class roster disclaimer

Class roster data (Classes 1–31 only). The class, section, and related roster fields for Classes 1–31 come from U.S. government training-roster records held by the National Archives. Camp Ritchie Museum, Inc. (also known as The Ritchie History Museum) digitized that material and made it available for this project. The underlying records are public-domain government information; the museum does not own the data. Please credit the museum as the digitization source when citing this roster. That dataset is separate from Dan Gross's research files and from material created by this wiki's maintainers. We have tried to catch errors, but mistakes and omissions remain possible; not every person who trained at Camp Ritchie appears in this data. On the original theritchieboys.com site, this material was a separate searchable class roster database. On this wiki it is integrated into soldier profiles, class pages, and related navigation. Attribution to the museum applies to that Classes 1–31 roster data (class/section assignments and related roster fields), not to biographies, photographs, research notes, timelines, or other content on the site. How information on this site is compiled

Nothing on this wiki comes from a single authoritative database. Pages are built by combining several kinds of material, then edited in the open like any wiki. The main layers are:

Dan Gross research files

The roster backbone is a spreadsheet and related working files Dan Gross maintained for the original theritchieboys.com project: Camp Ritchie class lists, demographics, IPW team assignments, research notes, and cross-references he and collaborators gathered over decades. That work is invaluable but was never a formal archival finding aid; typos, duplicate names, and uncertain matches were part of the working process.

Dan Gross timeline documents

Dan Gross also created more than 1,100 Word-document timelines about individual Ritchie Boys. These documents may combine National Archives and NARA records, Camp Ritchie personnel cards, newspapers, family research, personal notes, and working hypotheses. They are valuable research leads, but they are not treated as automatically verified biographies.

Timeline material is reviewed before it is used. Editors should separate directly documented facts from inferences or unconfirmed statements, compare conflicting dates or identities, and use the soldier's ASN and other corroborating details when matching a document. Private information—such as email addresses, phone numbers, street addresses, personal correspondence, or living-person contact details—is not published.

The original timeline documents remain private and are not uploaded to this wiki. When approved information is incorporated into a soldier page, the Sources section may cite the document descriptively, for example: Dan Gross, “Timeline of [soldier name] for Camp Ritchie” (private research document). The citation identifies the research source without exposing the original file or its private contents.

National Archives and census records

Class roster paper was digitized from National Archives sources. Soldier infobox fields also draw on WWII Army enlistment records, the 1940 census, and related public government data merged into the project file. NARA data itself can contain transcription errors, missing men, or fields that do not align cleanly with later research. Each page's collapsed technical section shows some of the codes used in the merge; it is not a full NARA record dump.

Facebook posts and community pages

Biographies, gallery images, and captions on many soldier pages were ported from the Ritchie Boys of WWII Facebook page and similar community posts. That material is often valuable—photographs, unit stories, and identifications—but it was written for social media, not for archival citation. Posts may repeat family lore, omit context, or attach the wrong image to a name. We curate and rewrite where we can; errors may remain.

Family members and other contributors

Relatives, historians, and readers send corrections, photographs, obituaries, and memories by email, contact forms, and wiki edits. We welcome this and rely on it, but information from families is not automatically verified. Memories conflict, documents are misread, and names are confused between relatives. Treat contributor prose as a lead until a primary source confirms it.

Automated and AI-assisted work

Parts of the site use software—and, in places, AI-assisted tools—to draft opening summaries, merge duplicate fields, link names of other Ritchie Boys in text, clean up imported Facebook prose, and suggest infobox values from biography text. These passes are meant to save editor time, not to certify accuracy. Output is reviewed when we notice problems, but there is no guarantee that every AI-generated or script-generated sentence was checked by a human expert.

Document OCR (contributor uploads)

Logged-in users may upload document scans from a soldier page or Contribute documents. Optical character recognition proposes facts (dates, ASN, class, and similar). Proposed facts are never written to a profile automatically—a human must review and click Apply (the ocr-reviewer group or an administrator). OCR misreads names and numbers; treat suggestions as leads until confirmed against the image.

Accuracy and open editing

This project is maintained in good faith, with the goal of honoring the Ritchie Boys and making research easier. That does not mean the data is correct. Infobox fields, biographies, gallery captions, and research notes can all be wrong, incomplete, or out of date.

Like Wikipedia and other open wikis, anyone can edit most pages here without an account. Well-intentioned edits can introduce new mistakes; vandalism or careless changes are possible too. Text you read today may change tomorrow.

When accuracy matters—for genealogy, legal purposes, media, or publications—check primary sources yourself: National Archives military personnel files, unit histories, contemporaneous newspapers, published memoirs, and museum holdings. Cite the underlying record, not this wiki alone.

Yellow Record status: unconfirmed banners mark class-roster matches that are not high confidence. Research notes (below) are a separate working file and are not verified biography.

Research notes

Notes copied onto soldier pages (and later additions under Research notes) are a working file, not a verified biography. They may be unverified, incomplete, or incorrect, and should not be treated as established fact. If you have a source, correct the page or explain the change on its talk page.

What was imported

Each soldier page has:

An infobox built from names, Army serial number (ASN), class/section/rank, vitals, nativity, religion, enlistment, IPW teams, and related public fields
Research notes copied from the source file when they existed
A collapsed technical section with NARA and census codes used in the merge (not the raw NARA dump string)

Pages are titled Surname, First (ASN) so men with the same name stay distinct.

Match confidence

Class-roster rows were matched to demographics on name plus ASN (full, partial, or near). A yellow Record status: unconfirmed banner appears when that match is not high confidence. Treat those infobox class fields as a lead to check, not as settled fact.

Each soldier page also carries a short Sources & confidence note: research notes are leads; contested claims need a citation or a Talk discussion. Editors can mark a line with {{Needs source}}.

How to cite this wiki

Cite the soldier page and the date you read it. For the underlying government records, cite NARA WWII Army enlistment files, the 1940 census, and the class roster independently. Wiki text can change. Reproduction of Camp Ritchie Museum material is limited as stated in the Class roster disclaimer section above.
