Bailey had been a soldier, author, journalist, linguist, expatriate and a leading expert on Germany and Russia. Bailey was an award-winning journalist for Max Ascoli's The Reporter and in 1968 served as its last editor before Ascoli closed the magazine, disappointed that Lyndon Johnson declined to run again. Braley was a foreign correspondent for the New York Daily News covering Eastern Europe and author of Bad News: The Foreign Policy of the New York Times. Co-author of book “Battleground Berlin” (re Cold War). George Bailey, a former director of Radio Liberty, died in Munich September 12 after heart surgery. He was Radio Liberty director in the Reagan Administration when it was most effective in helping the collapse of the Soviet Union. Lived and worked in Germany after World War II. Was journalist and served as editor of Max Ascoli’s ‘The Reporter’. Bailey was fluent in several languages, and served as translator for General Eisenhower at the Rheims, France, surrender ceremonies. French, Italian, Hungarian, Modern Greek) and served as. He was retired in 1985, after a campaign of rather absurd vilification in the then-East German press that coincided with criticism of his broadcasting Aleksander Solzhenitsyn by American journalists including James M. Bailey's books included his memoir Germans, Galileo's Children (about Andrei Sakharov), Battleground Berlin (with David Murphy and Sergei Kondrachev) and The Experts (with Seymour Frieden). Both Bailey and Solzhenitsyn married partly Jewish women.
