Werner Steinberg trained at Camp Ritchie. A 12 December 1943 Washington Post article, "USO Gets Pup for Soldier's Girl," describes his attempt to buy a dog in Washington for his girlfriend in Texas; Army rules blocked the purchase, and the USO arranged an alternative.
