Arnold M. Silver (4 December 1919–16 December 1993) was an American Ritchie Boy (Class 21; IPW Team 162) who interrogated at Oberursel after the war and later served as a CIA operations officer, including as Chief of Station in Luxembourg.

Biography

Arnold M. Silver was born on 4 December 1919 in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Tufts University and received a master’s degree in German philology from Harvard University in 1942.

Silver entered Camp Ritchie in September 1942 (ASN 13106118) and trained as a German linguist, graduating as a Technician Third Grade (certificate 8441). He took part in the Normandy landings and served as a prisoner-of-war interrogator; on 29 December 1944 he was assigned to IPW-Ge Team 162 with the 66th Infantry Division. In September 1945 he joined the interrogation staff at Oberursel (7707th European Command Intelligence Center / Camp King), where he interrogated figures including Otto Skorzeny, Walter Schellenberg, and Richard Kauder, and later prepared CIC memoranda concerning Klaus Barbie.

After the war Silver became a CIA operations officer and served as Chief of Station in Luxembourg from 1957 to 1960. He retired from the CIA in 1978, settled in Luxembourg, and continued to publish on European and Soviet affairs, including the essay “Questions, Questions, Questions” on Oberursel. He died of multiple myeloma on 16 December 1993 in Luxembourg City.
