William W. Hess (1921–2018), known as Bill Hess, was a German-born Ritchie Boy (Class 6) who interrogated and monitored prisoners at Fort Hunt, Virginia (P.O. Box 1142), and later worked in Pentagon intelligence analysis.
Biography[edit | edit source]
William W. Hess, known as Bill Hess, was born in 1921 in Nuremberg, Germany, and came to the United States as a teenager before World War II. After graduating from the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie (Class 6) in May 1943, he was assigned to the secret interrogation installation at Fort Hunt, Virginia—operated under the cover address P.O. Box 1142—where Ritchie-trained personnel interrogated and monitored German prisoners using conversation, listening devices, and related techniques rather than physical coercion.
Among prisoners Hess interrogated, monitored, or transcribed was U-boat officer Friedrich (“Fritz”) Guggenberger. After the war Hess worked as an intelligence research analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon, later assisted Maryland Representative Mike Barnes’s office, helped found Temple Emanuel in Kensington, Maryland, and volunteered as a docent at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. He died in 2018.
