Frank M. Atchley (21 November 1910 – 8 April 2003) was a U.S.-born Ritchie Boy (Class 22) who trained as a Field Artillery captain at Camp Ritchie and later served in the Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel.
Biography edit
Frank M. Atchley was born on 21 November 1910. He entered active duty on 6 February 1942 (ASN 0306244) and trained at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. About 1943 he was at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, where family notes place him helping organize schooling for soldiers with limited formal education. He completed the 22nd class at the Military Intelligence Training Center on 21 October 1944 as a captain of Field Artillery.
Orders briefly pointed him toward Okinawa; after code material was broken and schedules changed he was held at the 13th Replacement Depot on Oahu, Hawaii. After the war he served as dean of agriculture at the Army University Center at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin, and received an honorable discharge on 8 November 1946.
In the Reserve he completed an Instructor Training Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky (June 1951), was appointed major in 1952 and lieutenant colonel on 1 October 1953, and did active-duty training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He died on 8 April 2003.
