James Aloysius Doyle (20 March 1921 – 20 November 2019) was a Pittsburgh-born Ritchie Boy (Class 18) photo interpreter in the Pacific who later led the Catholic Press Association for thirty years.

Biography

James Aloysius “Jim” Doyle was born on 20 March 1921 in Pittsburgh’s Crafton Heights neighborhood. After Depression-era moves, the family settled on Long Island. At Queens College he was elected president of the Class of 1943; he married classmate Ethel Miriam Clancey in October 1943.

Doyle trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 18) and served as an aerial photo interpreter—first on Bougainville, then at MacArthur’s headquarters in Australia and Manila—rising to master sergeant. Recalled as a reserve intelligence officer in 1951, he served in Germany.

From 1958 to 1988 he was executive director of the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada; in 1984 Pope John Paul II named him a Knight of St. Gregory. He later wrote for Catholic New York. Doyle died on 20 November 2019 in Lake Mary, Florida, at age 98.
