George Mandler (1924–2016) was a Ritchie Boy (from Austria; Jewish) who trained at Camp Ritchie in class 21 and served with IPW Team 410;165.
Biography[edit | edit source]
George Mandler (June 11, 1924 – May 6, 2016) was an Austrian-born American psychologist, who became a distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California, San Diego. Mandler was born in Vienna on June 11, 1924, the son of a successful Jewish wholesaler. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1924 to a middle class family.
After the German invasion of Austria in 1938, Mandler was sent by his parents to an English boarding school.
He retired in 1994 and also became a visiting professor at University College London. George attended New York University (Chem & Modern Languages), one-half year. As World War II progressed, captured equipment was sent to Camp Ritchie to the training cadres of the Composite School Unit (CS), which simulated enemy, mostly German, tactics.
He was the head of the psychology department at the University of California at San Diego.
Mandler was drafted by the US Army in 1943 and was trained in military intelligence at Camp Ritchie.
Army and trained in military intelligence; as a native speaker of German, he helped interrogate Germany prisoners with the 7th Army. There were a number of men from the Hagerstown, MD, and Waynesboro, PA area who served in the CSU. He ended up as a front line interrogator with the 7th Army in Germany.
