Hans H. Namuth (1915–1990) was a German-born photographer and United States Army Military Intelligence Interpreter who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 10 (roster team MII 415).

Biography

Hans H. Namuth was born in 1915 in Essen, Germany. After his father joined the Nazi Party, Namuth left Germany on 20 September 1933 for Paris, worked odd jobs, and began photography with Georg Reisner in Mallorca and later in Spain during the Civil War. He came to the United States before Pearl Harbor.

Drafted in December 1943, he completed basic training in Spartanburg, South Carolina, then trained at the Military Intelligence Training Center at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 10. He served with Military Intelligence Interpreters (MII) — roster team MII 415 — interrogating civilians for tactical information and later prisoners of war. He was in England (including Tenby, Wales) before the invasion, landed with the 2nd Infantry Division near Omaha Beach in June 1944, entered Germany near Aachen, and finished the campaign in Czechoslovakia in May 1945. He then worked briefly with the War Crimes Division at Freising near Munich before returning to New York as a civilian in late October 1945.

After the war Namuth became a noted photographer in New York, known especially for documenting artists. He died in 1990.
