Freddy S. Zirl (1918–1990), born Freddy S. Steinbrecher, was a Czechoslovakia-born Ritchie Boy (Class 25) who served as a technician fifth grade on MII Team 465-G with the Fifteenth Army.
Biography edit
Freddy S. Zirl was born in 1918 in Czechoslovakia. As Freddy S. Steinbrecher he arrived in the United States from Canada on 2 November 1943 and soon took the surname Zirl. Still not yet a U.S. citizen, he was inducted at Camp Upton, Yaphank, New York, on 4 March 1944 (ASN 42076859).
Zirl trained at Camp Ritchie as a private in Class 25 (30 November 1944 – 29 January 1945), specializing as a German linguist. With classmate Herman Zanders and other graduates he staged at Camp Kilmer, embarked on the Queen Mary on 3 March 1945, and reached Scotland on 11 March. On 2 April 1945, now a technician fifth grade on MII Team 465-G under 1st Lt. William A. Venohr, with T/Sgt Richard Moos, Cpl George S. Carlisle, and Zanders, he was assigned to the Fifteenth U.S. Army for late-war operations and occupation work in western Germany.
He died in 1990.
