Paul A. Mayer (born 1907) was a United States Army Staff Sergeant who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 16. Paul enlisted at Ft Jay Governors Island, New York.

Biography

Paul Adolf Mayer was born on 4 September 1907 in Cologne, Germany, the son of surgeon Ernst Mayer and Elisabeth (Lisbeth) Mayer. After schooling in Cologne he studied law in Geneva, Berlin, and Cologne and became a member of the Cologne Court of Appeals. Forced from the profession in 1933, he joined a German metal and ore firm. After Kristallnacht he fled with his wife Margaret (Margo) to England, and in May 1940 the couple immigrated to New York City.

Mayer entered the Army at Fort Jay, New York, on 14 August 1942 and became a naturalized citizen in Jacksonville, Florida, on 5 February 1943. After stateside training he graduated from Camp Ritchie with Class 16 (German) on 5 April 1944 as an assistant interrogator. Sent to Europe at the end of July 1944, he wrote home from England and France until a perforated ulcer in December 1944 returned him to the United States on a hospital ship.

Mayer died on 21 June 1984.
