Earl V. Pavlovich (12 July 1924 – 9 February 2018), later Earl V. Prebezac, was a Camp Ritchie photo-intelligence trainee who served overseas with the 937th Aviation Engineer Battalion and afterward taught for decades in Seattle.

Biography

Earl V. Pavlovich was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on 12 July 1924 to Mildred (Milka) and Bronco Pavlovich. After his mother’s remarriage he was adopted by George Prebezac and took that surname (the adoption was completed after he was already in the Army). He left high school young, worked odd jobs, then volunteered for the cavalry and trained with the 101st Cavalry before being selected for Camp Ritchie for Slavic language skills.

At Ritchie he trained in photo and aerial intelligence (Class 5) and roomed near photographer David “Chim” Seymour; the two partnered on field exercises and photo-lab work in 1943. After graduation he served as a sergeant with the 937th Aviation Engineer Battalion for about twenty-two months in England, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, and later in the Army Reserve.

Using the G.I. Bill he finished a GED, studied at Oregon State College (where he met Nann Ballard) and the University of Washington (B.A. in history), then taught drama and social studies at Seattle’s Roosevelt High School (1953–1988). He co-founded Edmonds’ Driftwood Players, managed Seattle theaters, and remained active in community performance until late in life. He died on 9 February 2018 at age 93.
