Marcell F. Prawy (1911–2003) was a United States Army Private who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 12. Marcell enlisted at New York City, New York.

Biography

Marcel Horace Frydmann Prawy was born on 29 December 1911 in Vienna, Austria. He studied law and musicology, earned a doctorate, and worked as private secretary to tenor Jan Kiepura. In 1939 he left Europe for the United States by way of Italy.

Prawy entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 12). He returned to Vienna in 1946 as a U.S. Army cultural officer.

From 1955 Prawy served as a dramaturge at the Vienna Volksoper, where he helped introduce American musicals to European audiences, and in 1972 became chief dramaturge of the Vienna State Opera. He also taught, wrote extensively about opera and operetta, and became a familiar Austrian radio and television commentator. An honorary member of the Vienna State Opera, he died in Vienna on 23 February 2003.
