Emanuel Suessmann (17 July 1910 – 4 July 1978) was a Leipzig-born Jewish refugee and Ritchie Boy (Class 22) who served with military intelligence in Germany.

Biography

Emanuel Suessmann (born Emanuel Süssmann) was born on 17 July 1910 in Leipzig, Germany, and worked as a grocery storekeeper and gardener. After imprisonment at Sachsenhausen following Kristallnacht, he reached Britain as a refugee on 23 May 1939 and lived at Kitchener Camp, Richborough. He sailed from Liverpool on the Antonia on 30 May 1940 for Canada and then the United States.

Drafted into the U.S. Army (ASN 37611363), Suessmann trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 22) and served with the Military Intelligence Division in Germany. A transfer to a Composite School Unit is recorded for 26 September 1944; photographs place him at Camp Ritchie in March 1945 and at the Mainz railroad station in July 1945. He received a Military Intelligence Division certificate dated 26 September 1945 and an honorable discharge on 26 October 1945 as a private first class.

He married Louise (Lisl) Schwarzenberger (1907–2000), who had immigrated in 1939, and later worked as a shipping clerk. Suessmann died on 4 July 1978. His and Louise's papers are held by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (Accession 1999.A.0040).
