Henry H. Arnhold (15 September 1921 – 23 August 2018), born Heinrich-Hartmut Richard Gustav Arnhold, was a Dresden-born Ritchie Boy (Class 10) who later rebuilt the family banking firm in New York.

Biography

Heinrich-Hartmut Richard Gustav Arnhold was born on 15 September 1921 in Dresden to Lisa and Heinrich Arnhold of the Gebrüder Arnhold banking family. After the Nazis forced the Aryanization of Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder and his father’s death in 1935, he attended school in Switzerland; in 1940 he was arrested in Norway and held at Ulven camp, then escaped via Sweden and Cuba to the United States.

He joined the Army, trained at Camp Ritchie (Class 10) among the Ritchie Boys, and gained U.S. citizenship through his service. He was naturalized on 11 June 1943.

After the war he re-entered the family’s New York banking business, chaired Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder from 1960 to 2015, and became a major philanthropist. He died at home in Manhattan on 23 August 2018 at age 96.
