Heinz Goldschmidt (also known as Henry Goldsmith) was a United States Army intelligence officer and Ritchie Boy who trained at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, in Class 3.

Biography

Heinz Goldschmidt was born on 4 March 1915 in Berlin, Germany. He left Berlin in April 1933, shortly after the boycott of Jewish-owned shops. In the United States he was also known as Henry Goldsmith.

Goldschmidt entered Class 3 at Camp Ritchie on 2 November 1942. His Ritchie record lists him as First Lieutenant Heinz Goldschmidt, a graduate of the 3rd class. He became one of the Ritchie Boys and served as an instructor and officer in intelligence and interrogation; men he trained landed in Normandy on D-Day.

Near the end of the war he married actress Janet Fox, a niece of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edna Ferber; they remained married until her death in 2002. From the early 1950s he was vice president of Greystone Press, a pioneer in monthly mail-order books and records. He was a member of the Palm Beach Literary Society and the Prologue Society. Goldschmidt died in Palm Beach on 29 January 2014 at the age of 98.
