~~We have some unfortunate news to share~~. ~~We were notified this evening by Max~~ Perutz ~~that his grandfather~~, Ritchie ~~Boy Frederick Walter Perutz passed away yesterday,~~ December ~~21, 2022 at 10:10am~~ in ~~Montecito, California at~~ the ~~age of 103. Many called him~~ Fred ~~or Fritz~~, ~~but Max called him Opa~~. ~~His grandfather was 1~~ in ~~a billion. 103 1/2 years old and enjoyed every second of it. May his memory be for a blessing~~.

Frederick W. Perutz was born on 22 May 1919 in Austria. After reaching the United States he studied photography at the New York Photo Institute and worked as a clerk examining foreign shipping documents.

He enlisted in February 1943, took additional basic training with the 275th Engineering Battalion in April 1943, and graduated from Camp Ritchie Class 8 on 16 July 1943 (certificate 2584). Later assignments included travel-duty recruiting at ASTP campuses (7 December 1943). He rose to technical sergeant.

His life story is told in the book ''Fred Perutz: From Anschluss to America'', written with David Wilk. He died in 2022.
