Frederick W. Perutz (22 May 1919 – 2022) was an Austria-born Ritchie Boy (Class 8) who rose to technical sergeant and later told his refugee-to-Army story in Fred Perutz: From Anschluss to America.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Frederick W. Perutz was born on 22 May 1919 in Austria. After reaching the United States he studied photography at the New York Photo Institute and worked as a clerk examining foreign shipping documents.
He enlisted in February 1943, took additional basic training with the 275th Engineering Battalion in April 1943, and graduated from Camp Ritchie Class 8 on 16 July 1943 (certificate 2584). Later assignments included travel-duty recruiting at ASTP campuses (7 December 1943). He rose to technical sergeant.
His life story is told in the book Fred Perutz: From Anschluss to America, written with David Wilk. He died in 2022.
