Franz was an Italian-born Protestant Ritchie Boy who trained at Camp Ritchie in Class 18. Research notes also associate him with IPW Team 1. On 11 February 1944, IPW Team 1 was attached to the 101st Airborne Division (VIII Corps). Core Team 1 members included Joseph C. Pangerl Jr., Alphonse Francis Gion, Hermann Coquelin, Emil H. Koslan, Frederick C. Patheiger, and George Goldberg.
